Headway London

An exhibition and public programme celebrating the artists of the brain injury charity Headway, challenging conventional ideas of artistic value, ability and who gets to be recognised as an artist.

Project Summary

Peaks of Imperfection brought together work by nineteen artists from Submit to Love Studios, an open studio based at Headway East London supporting artists affected by brain injury. Spanning painting, ceramics, sculpture, embroidery, drawing, poetry and music, the exhibition centred the artists and their work on their own terms — beyond biography or diagnosis.

Alongside the exhibition, I co-developed a public programme designed to extend its themes through participation and exchange. Bringing together artists, collaborators and audiences through workshops, making, film, food and conversation, the programme created different ways to encounter the work while opening up wider questions around creativity, access and who gets to be an artist
