re:arc Institute

A participatory workshop exploring how the built environment can create the conditions for connection, belonging and community life.

Project Summary

Developed and facilitated for re:arc institute, Changing Tack, A Third Place drew on ACV’s research into community and culture to explore the role of informal public spaces in supporting social life.

Using Ray Oldenburg’s concept of the ‘third place’ as a starting point, the workshop invited participants to examine the qualities that enable spaces to become accessible, inclusive and socially meaningful. Through discussion, case studies and collaborative exercises, participants considered their own experiences of third places before reimagining the design of a public square around principles of connection, participation and belonging
